Ryan is inspired by tough problems, tactile materials, people and processes. While he takes a scientific approach to design-problem solving, he loves that design isn’t math in that there are so many ways to tackle a challenge and so many different solutions to be had. He starts every design with a pencil and paper. The computer is a tool to urge ideas and sketches to life, not a place where ideas are born.
While Ryan has been known for his artistic tendencies since grade school, what he always enjoyed most was people’s interest in, and reactions to, what he created. He is still acutely interested in audience, whether designing a publication or website, talking communication strategy, or drawing something on a napkin.
Ryan aims to create simple user experiences that open up worlds for real people—experiences that resonate. The projects he’s the most proud of are the ones that promote a social good or bring awareness to a topic or story that deserves to be in the public consciousness: diverse storytelling, design for change, graphics that educate...design that works.
